Will you be providing housing?
Yes. See our housing page.
I am flying in. What is the nearest airport, and how can I get to the workshop from the airport?
The closest airport is Detroit Metro Airport (DTW). If you are flying, please e-mail us (jaz@jazdance.com) so we can help you arrange transportation.
I want to come, but I don't have a car! Can you help?
Maybe! First, try nagging all your friends who have cars. If that doesn't work, email us at jaz@jazdance.com. If we have anyone registered in your area already, we'll pass your info along to them.
I want to come, but I'm broke! Can you help?
While we will not be providing any free passes to Pirate Swing for people in this situation, we do understand that some dancers really, truly can not afford to pay the full registration price. If this describes you and you're willing to be our slave for the weekend (muahaha!), send us an email at jaz@jazdance.com and we'll see if we can work something out.
What is the Advanced Track audition process?
The advanced track audition is different from what you may be used to. There will be two parts to the audition.
The first part is an 'all skate' format, where you will dance with a few people to some moderate tempo music. You may be pulled aside and told that you have made it in. During this first part, no one will be put in the intermediate track yet.
The second part is where you will dance with an instructor for a short period of time. You may be told at this point you will either be told you have made it in, or, that instructor will say they believe you should be in the intermediate track. If you are told you be in the intermediate track, you will still get an opportunity to dance with one more instructor. We understand that some times you don't sync up well with someone, or it was just a bad dance. Should the second instructor believe you should be in the intermediate track, then, that is where you will be placed for the weekend.
In short, you will only be placed in the intermediate track if TWO instructors both believe this should be the case. It only takes one 'yes' to get in. In this way, the 'appeals' process is built in, as a normal appeal would have you dance with an instructor.
An additional part of this process will be that our teachers will provide you a short bit of feedback should they believe you should be in the intermediate track. You won't go away without some insight to their reasoning.
All of the instructors decisions are final. The event organizers have full faith in our instructors ability to make track decision, due to their experience in these matters, and, they are the ones teaching the classes.
